WHY FOCUS ON SCHOOLS?By Pamela A. Popper, Ph.D., N.D.Several studies have shown a link between diet and lifestyle and learning, behavior, and academic achievement. We know, for example, that breakfast programs positively affect test scores and attendance, and that physical activity is associated with improved cognitive function. Studies show that overweight children tend to experience lower academic achievement than their normal-weight counterparts. This is not surprising since being overweight affects self-esteem as well as all other aspects of life. one research study concluded that obese children rate their quality of life as being worse than pediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. There are direct and indirect costs to schools and school systems resulting from the poor health status of our children. Indirect costs include the time teachers spend dealing with behavioral problems in the classroom. But the direct costs are significant and measurable. Children who do not do well in school require special education programs. Although not all special education students are in these types of classes due to poor nutrient status, a significant percentage are. Many schools have to allocate staff time to administer drugs treat physical and emotional conditions brought about poor diet and lifestyle habits. In addition to the time required to administer these medications, schools subject themselves daily to legal risks. Unhealthy kids miss more days of school than healthier kids. In some states, attendance is a factor in determining funding for schools. A single day's absence can cost between $9 and $20 per student. This can translate into tens of thousands of lost dollars in larger school districts. Last, but not least, health problems are not limited to children. Teachers and other staff who consume the Standard American Diet and practice unhealthy habits drive up the cost of health insurance coverage, placing another financial burden on already over-taxed school systems. School is where kids spend their time and where they learn a great deal about the world they live in. This influence can be used to educate children about the importance of diet, lifestyle and health, which can have the powerful effect of improving the health status of our kids in the future. Dealing effectively with this issue should be a priority for every school and every community. |
